Waryam Singh

City: Kapurthala

Waryam Singh, son of Wazir Singh of village Dhapin or Dhobke (Dhakai ?), Kapurthala State. He emigrated to Canada in 1907. He paid a visit to India in 1911 and returned to Canada in 1913. When the "Komagata Maru" was at Vancouver in July 1914 a meeting was held in the Sikh Temple to consider the cases of Bhag Singh (shot by Bela Singh), Balwant Singh of village Khurdpur, district Jullundur (hanged in the 2nd Supplementary Case) and Hamam Singh of village Sahri, district Hoshiarpur (hanged in the Burma Conspiracy Case) who had been arrested in Sumas for trying to smuggle arms from the U. S. A. into Canada. At this meeting Waryam Singh made a speech, exhorting the audience to preach Ghadr propaganda to the native forces in India and chase the foreigner out of India. In April 1915 he enlisted in the 38th Regiment C. R. F. at Toronto and went overseas. He was invalided and sent back to Vancouver where he was finally discharged in March 1918. On his return he was treated badly and practically ostracized by the local Hindus on account of his enlistment in the Army. He was back in Canada in 1924, and in 1928 was Secretary of the local Khalsa Diwan and as such wrote to India for the news and addresses of the Babbar Akalis. He returned to India, sailing from Vancouver in October 1931. He was much embittered as the result of a reduction effected in his war pension.
