Ujagar Singh

Ujagar Singh, son of Hazara Singh, Jat, of Bilga, District Jullundur. First came to notice when he recited an objectionable poem at a meeting of the Kirti Kisan Party held on the occasion of the Chhapar fair on the 17th and 18th September 1929. Was the Secretary of the Congress Committee, Bilga, and District Secretary of the Zamindar League. Jullundur, and was reported to be in close touch with extremist political agitators in the province including Bhag Singh Canadian (B-47) and Karam Singh of Chima (K-20). Was reported to be engaged in revolutionary propaganda, in company with Arjan Singh Daler, a returned emigrant, and was suspected of trying to collect a band of desperadoes to commit a political dacoity. Was sentenced to nine months' R. I. on 9th May 1930, for delivering a seditious speech at a political diwan held at Bilga on 25th January 1930. He next came to notice in July 1931 when he was reported to be the President of the Congress Committee, Bilga, and was said to have received over Rs. 2,000 from America as a donation towards the expenses of the "Doaba Dehati Political Conference" which was held from the 21st to the 25th of August 1931. Was elected General Secretary of the Jullundur branch of the Kirti Kisan Sabha in January 1932. Was sentenced to 3 months' R. I. and a fine of Rs. 100 or in default to 1!4 month's further R. I. under Section 4 of Ordinance No. V of 1932 on the 25th January 1932. Participated in a procession taken out in Bilga on the 25th May 1932 in which the national flag was taken out and boycott slogans were shouted, and was again sentenced to six months' R. I. and a fine of Rs. 100 under the same Section on the 4th of June 1932.
