Teja Singh Sutantar, alias T. S. Azad, alias T. S. Giani, alias Samundar
Singh, son of Desa Singh alias Kirpal Singh of Aloona, P. S. Sadr, District Gurdaspur. He participated in the Akali movement, and later-
went to Kabul as a preacher of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak
Committee in 1923, where he got into touch with the Afghan authorities
and the Soviet Minister, and came under the tutelage of the late Udham
Singh of village Kasel, district Amritsar. Subsequently he joined a
Military Academy in Constantinople in 1924. While there he came into
touch with Maulvi Obeidulla Sindhi (a Pan-Islamist) and Zafiar Hassan (a
Muhajir), and corresponded with Gurmukh Singh (G-54) and Wasdev
Singh alias Ishar Singh (W-7), in Kabul, suggesting to the latter the
seeding of students from America or India to Europe for Military
training. Finishing his training early in 1929 he left Constantinople about
the middle of August and after visiting Paris and Berlin, where he met
Rattan Singh (R-36), he reached San Francisco about the middle of
December. He was there appointed a Director of the American
Hindustani Trading Co., a commercial organization formed to promote
the economic policy of the Ghadr Party and to be used as a cover for
other forms of activities. He worked in the Ghadr Ashram till October
1930 and subsequently toured in California in the interests of the Ghadr
party's military policy. He also met Rattan Singh on the Texas-Mexican
border. In 1930 he subscribed a number of articles to the 'Hindustan
Ghadr' advocating "martial revolution" and gave lessons in bomb-making
free of charge. He sailed from San Francisco under compulsion by the
Immigration authorities on the 22nd of January 1931 and landed in Panama
on 12th February. He reorganized the Ghadr Party in Panama and
thereafter was engaged in propaganda. He left for the Argentina about
April 1931, and stayed there till March 1932 establishing branches of the
Ghadr Party in that area. He then proceeded to Brazil, whence he
intended to leave for Europe in connection with a proposed coffee
business in Turkey, but the Ghadr Party were averse to his plan as they
could not spare the services of the brain of the party. In July 1932 he
arrived in Berlin and joined Rattan Singh. In response to the desire of the
party he is reported to have left Berlin for Moscow on or about the 30th
September 1932 to receive training for at least a year. By reason of his
military training Teja Singh is regarded in Ghadr Party circles as the
future Commander-in-Chief of the Sikh Army. He travels on a Turkish
passport. His wife is the sister of Wasdev Singh alias Ishar Singh (W-7).
