Pakhar Singh, son of Atra, Jat, of Mananwali, P. S. Phagwara, Kapurthala
State. Went to America about 1907 and returned in 1914-15. Was
recommended to Buta Singh (hanged in August 1915), of village
Akalgarh, district Ludhiana, by Hardit Singh (hanged), of village Daliwal,
district Jullundur. Went back to America about 1921. Was Secretary of
the Khalsa Diwan Society. Vancouver, Canada, in April 1925 and lived at
1772, 2nd Avenue W. Vancouver. Sent a cheque for Rs. 1,363 in
February 1926, to Bhag Singh Canadian (B-47), and Karam Singh Chima
(K-20), for distribution to the families of the Babbar Akalis and another
cheque for Rs. 1,364 to the Secretary, Shiromani Doaba Khalsa Diwan.
C/o "Desh Sewak" for the relief of the families of agitators of the Doaba
who had been convicted since 1914, for taking part in politics or the
Akali movement. In 1927 Gajjan Singh (G-3), who was a convict in the
Amoy Road jail, Shanghai, wrote letters to Pakhar Singh and others in
Canada asking for financial assistance. In 1928 he was reported to be an
important member of the Ghadr Party. About the end of 1928 Pakhar
Singh was nominated to the Executive of the Canadian Branch of the
Indian National Congress. At a meeting held at Vancouver on 9th
December 1928, he delivered a speech referring to plans for starting
guerilla warfare in India and betrayed considerable hostility towards Piara
Singh of Langeri (P-25). Also spoke at an Akhand Path held at the Sikh
Temple, Vancouver, on 5th April 1931 to commemorate the death of
Bhagat Singh (murderer of a Police Officer in India) and others and
exhorted the young men to avenge their deaths. About the end of 1930 or
the beginning of 1931 he spoke at a meeting held at the Sikh Temple in
New Westminster in memory of the death of the Babbar Akalis and also
attended and spoke at a meeting held at Vancouver in September 1931 to
celebrate Master Mota Singh’s (M-38) release from jail in India. Is still in
Canada. Owns landed property at his village.
