Maya Singh, son of Dewa Singh, Jat, of Talwandi-Bhindran, P. S.
Srigobindpur, District Gurdaspur, A man of this name appears from the
correspondence found with Hamam Singh of village Sahri, district
Hoshiarpur, the bomb maker (hanged in the Burma Conspiracy Case), to
have been an active and important member of the Ghadr Party. Tarak
Nath Das (one of the leading figures in the revolutionary party on the
West Coast of America during the Great War) in his letter dated 1st April
1914 to Hamam Singh of Sahri asked the latter to write to Maya Singh to
send him some money. Another letter found was from Maya Singh
himself addressed to Pal Singh and Hazara Singh, asking them to take
certain of his valuables to India, whither he would follow shortly. Made a
statement according to which he returned to India early in 1915 via Japan,
Manila, Hong Kong and Siam. Confessed having participated in Ghadr
propaganda in these places, subscribed to Ghadr funds, and attended
seditious meetings organized by notorious Har Dayal and other ardent
supporters of the party. Was sent to Burma as a witness for the
prosecution in a conspiracy case, and on return was restricted to his
village in May 1917. Released from restrictions in July 1917. Remained
at his village from 1917 to 1931 and continued to attend Akali Diwans
from time to time. Accompanied the Shahidi Jathas No. 10 and 12 from
Amritsar to Jaito, as a compounder in 1925. Left for Singapore in 1931
along with Dr. Sant Singh Saini of his village, and is reported to be still
there. Is a staunch Akali.
Description : Sallow complexion; age 40/42 years; height 5-8"; stout
build; a scar about 1" in diameter on right shin towards the outer side;
knows Urdu and Gurmukhi.
