Maya Singh, son of Bhulla Singh, Mehton Rajput, of Paldi, P. S.
Mahilpur, District Hoshiarpur. He went to America in 1906, and worked
in one lumber mill near Vancouver, and was said to be a man of
influence. He wrote a somewhat seditious letter to Bhola Singh and Labh
Singh, residents of Paldi. In 1918 he started the Mayo Lumber Co. near
Duncan on Vancouver Island and became a successful millowner giving
employment to a considerable number of Indians. From 1925-27 he was
in India, and was reported to be trying to get some more persons of his
caste into Canada. He attended a secret meeting held on 1st July 1928 at
Mayo Lumber Co., Vancouver Island, at which Lachman Singh of
Khurdpur (L-6) delivered a message from the Ghadr Party to the effect that the Ghadr Party wished the Canadian Sikhs to depute three men, one
ofwhom was to be Piara Singh of Langeri (P-25), to California to consult
the members of the Party regarding the future programme of work to be
undertaken in India. In 1928 he and his brothers started another lumber
mill—the Kapur—at Sooke Lake. He was one of the largest subscribers
to the fund raised by Kartar Singh of Toronto (K-30) in 1929 for the
revival of political agitation in Canada. He was present at a meeting of
the Hindustan Y. M. A. held at Duncan, B. C. in June 1929 at which
resolutions were passed praising Bhagat Singh's (murderer of a Police
Officer in India) exploits, and deciding to send money to India to
encourage bomb-making. In 1930 the Mayo Lumber Co. had to close
down owing to lack of business. He was one ofthe speakers at a meeting
held in Victoria in June 1931 to commemorate the death of the Babbar
Akalis. He is still in Canada, operating his mill at Sooke Lake.
