Kesar Singh, son of Bhup Singh, of Tatgarh, P. S. Tam Taran, District
Amritsar. He was an important member of the Ghadr Party in America
and President of the Indian Association at Astoria, a political body to
which the notorious Har Dayal and the late Ram Chandra of Peshawar,
gave violent lectures. He was mentioned in the correspondence found
with Hamam Singh of Sahri (hanged), the bomb-maker. Kesar Singh left
America by the s. s. "Korea” on 29th September 1914, and was one ofthe
leaders ofthe party. At Hong Kong, where an important meeting was held
along with other Ghadr parties which had arrived there by different ships,
Kesar Singh was elected as a member of the Central Managing
Committee, which was to arrange for the Ghadr campaign in India. He
was sent for trial in the Lahore Conspiracy Case, and sentenced to death.
On appeal, the sentence was commuted to transportation for life. In 1931
the Local Government issued orders for his release on medical grounds
provided he abided by certain conditions but he refused to do so and
preferred to remain injail and is there still.
