K-35. Kartar Singh, alias Kartara, son of Lakha Singh, Jat, Village Garcha,
District Jullundur. After passing the Matriculation Examination from
Jullundur High School, he emigrated to America about 1922 and joined
the University of California at Berkeley. There was nothing to his
discredit in his village prior to his departure for America. He first came to
notice in California in 1927 as the sender of some objectionable articles
to the "Akali" and "Desh Sewak" newspapers. In 1928 he was reported to
be a member of the Ghadr Party and in August ofthe following year he
was a speaker at a Ghadr Party meeting held in Marysville. He was also a
speaker at a meeting of the Californian branch of the Indian National
Congress held in Sacramento early in April 1930 at which a resolution
was passed to popularise "India in Bondage" by Dr. Sunderland. He
spoke at further meetings ofthe Ghadr Party in 1930 and 1931. Latterly,
he was engaged as a store keeper in Marysville. He returned to India,
sailing from Victoria, B. C. in January 1933. Owns landed property at his
village.
