Ishar Singh

Village: Akhara

City: Ludhiana

Ishar Singh, son of Karam Singh, Village Akhara, District Ludhiana. Went to San Francisco in July 1914. He first came to notice early in 1917, when he became a member of the Bhagwan Singh faction of the Ghadr Party in America and on the 4th of February he attended the big Ghadr meeting at Fresno organized by Bhagwan Singh of village Viring, district Amritsar (a former leader of the Ghadr Party) and Santokh Singh of Dodher, district Amritsar (since dead) and attended another meeting at Stockton on 4th March 1917. After the arrests of Bhagwan Singh, Santokh Singh and others in 1917 he collected funds for their defense. In May visited Los Angeles with Santa Singh (S-18) and Jagat Singh (J-6), from the Ashram, and in the following month was living and working in Bhagwan Singh’s press in San Francisco and frequently attending court during his trial. In 1918 he spent a great deal of his time either at the Ashram or out collecting money. He was, in all probability, the Ishar Singh "Tulsari" who gave a receipt to Bekin's Storage Co. in San Francisco for some Ghadr literature which the Ashram were taking out of storage. In October he was said to be doing English-Urdu translation work at 5, Wood Street. He remained there till February 1918 after which he appears to have gone out to work. He was next heard of as having been appointed Assistant Secretary of the Ghadr meeting held, with a view to setting the differences between the two parties, in Sacramento on 15th March 1920. He was then working near Walnut Grove and Isleton. In May 1920, he and Dharm Singh of village Jian, district Hoshiarpur (since dead) collected funds at Walnut Grove for the Ghadr Party which they handed over to Gopal Singh (G-25) and Santokh Singh. In August 1920 he was Secretary of the Ghadr meeting organized at Sacramento in memory of Mr. Tilak. In June 1921 he was receiving treatment at the Fairmont Hospital in San Francisco and was in frequent attendance at 5, Wood Street. Under medical advice he sailed for India op the S.S. "Taiyo Maru" on 2nd July 1921 along with Surain Singh, son of Mit Singh of Sursingh, Lahore. He arrived in Calcutta by the S.S. "Bharata" on 9th July 1921 and proceeded to his home. Is educated.
