Harnam Singh, Master, alias Arjan Singh, son of Bhag Singh, Mahajan,
of Kahuta, District Rawalpindi. Educated at the Khalsa College,
Amritsar. One of the leading lieutenants of Gurdit Singh (G-46) of the
S. S. "Komagata Maru" on its outward and return voyage as far as Japan.
Returned to India by the "Mishima Maru" together with Bir Singh (of
Gurusar, now of Smagh, district Ferozepore), the Joint Secretary to
Gurdit Singh (G-46) on board the "Komagata Maru". During the voyage
he was active in inciting the passengers to revolt and on return to India
went to Nander with Nidhan Singh's party. When arrests were made at
Lahore on the discovery of the Ghadr conspiracy he fled across the
border into Tirah whence to Peshbulak with Dr. Mathra Singh, since
executed. They were both arrested by the Afghan authorities at the latter
place and taken in custody to Kabul where they were imprisoned.
Subsequently released by Sardar Nasrullah Khan on Mahendra Pratap's
recommendation and became an active member of the revolutionary party
in Kabul. About 1916 Harnam Singh was said to have been deputed to
return to India to deliver certain letters from the ex-Kaiser to Indian
Rajas, which had been brought by Mahendra Pratap, but it is not known
whether he actually visited India or not. There is reason to believe that he
again, visited India about 1918 on a special mission to certain Native
States. According to another report he seems to have gone to Russian
Turkestan and returned to Kabul with a party of Bolsheviks under
Kamensky in December 1919. Accompanied Mahendra Pratap to the
Pamirs but returned in September 1920. Was said to have visited Kahuta
in May 1923 with three other Sikhs, and to have disappeared before the
police could arrest him. Was reported to have brought Rs. 10,000 from
Kabul to the Desh Bhagat Qaidi Parwar Sahaik Committee (Committee
for the relief of the families of political prisoners). In January 1930 he
was reported to own soda factories at Jalslabad and Kabul and to have
formed a strong anti-British party, but was subsequently reported to have
abstained from seditious activities and to have quarreled with Gurmukh
Singh (G-54). In August 1932 he was reported to be anxious to return to
India and to be inclined to express his repentance for his past activities.
He was arrested at Kabul along with Gurmukh Singh (G-54) on 6th/7th
December 1932 for intriguing against the Afghan and British Governments and was sent to jail by the Afghan Government. Said to
have occasionally visited Peshawar secretly for short periods. Is still in
jail.
