Hardit Singh

Hardit Singh, son of Ganga Singh of Kot Fatuhi, P. S. Mahilpur, District Hoshiarpur. He was reported by the Canadian authorities to be a seditionist. He left Victoria by the S.S. "Canada Mani" on 1st September 1914, and was found in possession of the proscribed "Balance sheet of British Rule in India." He arrived in India by the S.S. "Josha Maru" and was interned. After his release under the Royal Amnesty of December 1919 he apparently remained quiet until 1923 when he was appointed a Jathedar of the Hoshiarpur branch of the Akali Dal. He took an active part in the Akali agitation and became the Editor of the "Desh Sewak" of Jullundur in 1924. He was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment in connection with a seditious article which appeared in his paper. He was also said to have been the Doaba representative of certain Canadian political societies. During the Civil Disobedience Movement of 1930-31, he took an active part in picketing, and attended the All-India National Congress at Karachi in 1931 as a delegate from the Doaba. He presided over the Doaba Kirti Kisan Conference held at Anandpur in March 1931, at the Congress. On 15th May 1930 he was convicted under Section 107/ 151 C. P. C. and was bound down for one year to keep the peace, and on his failure to furnish security he was sent to jail. While serving his sentence in jail he picked up acquaintance with his present associates all ofwhom are advocates of violence and took vows to murder Government officials and Europeans. On release from jail on 27th March 1931 he again reverted to Congress activities and took a leading part in the Congress meeting held at Jhaman on 8th November 1931 and received a golden sanad in recognition of his activities. He was challenged again on 10th February 1932 under Section 108, C. P. C. and was again bound down for Rs. 5,000 to keep the peace for one year. He again failed to furnish security and went to jail. He associates with Natha Singh of Dhun, district Lahore. (N-34).
