Harbans Singh, Basi, son of Gulzara Singh, Village Bundala, District
Jullundur. Last entered the U. S. A. on 6th March 1931 at the port of
San Francisco, California. He was admitted as a student destined for the
University of California, but he was not admitted owing to late arrival.
Was employed by Lakha Singh of Chiman district Jullundur (L-8) and
subsequently worked on Rattan Singh's (R-35) ranch near Walnut Grove.
Consequently he lost his status as a student and was arrested about April
1931. He was ordered to be deported to India on 15th April 1932, but
was permitted to depart voluntarily. He left New York by the S.S.
"Berengaria" on 23rd July 1932 via the British Isles and it was suspected
that he had gone to Russia. According to his own statement however, he
left Detroit about the beginning of October 1933 and went to Paris where
he stayed for 3 or 4 months in search of employment but failing to get it
returned to India arriving at Bombay by the S.S. "California" on 7th
March 1934. Holds passport No. 46016 issued at Lahore on 21st
November 1930.
