Gurdas Ram, alias G. R. Chadda, alias Gurdas Mai, son of Gonda
Mai, Khatri, of Hadiabad, P. S. Phagwara, Kapurthala State. Went
abroad in 1911. Delivered a speech at a seditious meeting of about 400
Indians at Fresno in January 1915. This meeting was called by Gurdas
Ram at the request of Ram Chandra Peshawari (a deceased leader of the
Ghadr Party) and was advertised in the "Ghadr.” Ram Chandra was
present and called for subscription. Gurdas Ram was reported to send
"Ghadr”, etc., to South Africa, Manila, Shanghai, Cuba and Panama. He
kept a hotel (probably for Indians) at Fresno and was in close touch with
Ram Chandra. Was a regular and popular Ghadr lecturer and an important
leader. Gurdas Ram also had a branch and was a contractor. Permanent
subscriber to the ’Ghadr”. In January 1918 he was in Blue Island and in
1920 and 1921 in Sacramento. Acted as Secretary at a Ghadr Party
meeting held at Sacramento on 25th January 1920. In 1923 he was Vice-
President of the United India League of America. Sailed from America by
the S.S. "President Polk” on 29th March 1924 and arrived in India in May.
In April 1925 he was reported to have got a hosiery shop in Niger Mandi
in Ludhiana city. Has been living in Ludhiana city for the last 8 or 9
years. Was for some time a Director of the People's Bank of Northern
India, on the failure of which he took to Life Insurance business. Has
been taking an active part in the Congress agitation and was convicted
under Ordinance IV of 1930 and sentenced to 3 months' rigorous
imprisonment on 15th September 1932. Also reported to have held the
offices of President and Secretary of the Ludhiana Congress Committee.
Is at present an agent of the Bharat Insurance Company at Ludhiana.
