Gurbakhsh Singh, Rangila, son of Narain Singh, originally of Sultanpur,
Kapurthala State, now settled in Village Ichra, P. S. Manjeh, District
Amritsar. Came to notice at Calcutta in 1929 as the editor of the now
defunct "Sanjiwal". In January 1930, he was elected to the Executive
Committee of the Kavia Kutia, Calcutta, and soon identified himself with
the activities of the Kirti Dal and the Young Comrades League of Bengal.
Was one of the men arrested on 26th March 1930 in connection with the
’Meerut Day’ celebrated by the Workers' and Peasants' Party, Bengal. In
April 1930, he toured the Punjab, meeting many revolutionary suspects
and members of the Nau Jawan Bharat Sabha. Was reported to have
discussed with one Amar Nath Sharma at Lahore, a plan to bomb the
house of Khan Bahadur Abdul Aziz, Officer on Special Duty, in
connection with the Lahore United Provinces Conspiracy Case. Nothing
came of the project, however for Gurbaksh Singh returned to Calcutta
early in May 1930. When the Nau Jawan Bharat Sabha was declared
illegal in 1931, he began to make tours in the country and became a
member of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Army. Was reported in
June 1931 to be attempting to procure arms from Bharatpur, along with
the extreme Maha Singh of village Kamalpur, district Ludhiana (since
dead). The latter was arrested on 2nd August 1931 and weapons were
recovered from members of his gang. In December 1931 and weapons
were recovered from members of his gang. In December 1931 he was at
Karachi and he and his companion, one Hari Singh, attempted to rob a
Cashier of the Customs. Was arrested on 26th March 1932 under Section
399 Indian Penal Code and a six chambered revolver was recovered from
his possession. Was sentenced to 2‘/2 years' rigorous imprisonment in the
Karachi Conspiracy Case on 2nd July 1932. He was simultaneously
prosecuted under Sections 120-B and 399, Merwar Penal Code, in the
Jodhpur Conspiracy Case and was convicted and sentenced to 1 year's
rigorous imprisonment for each of the offences, the sentences to run
concurrently.
