Gopal Singh, son of Jai Singh, caste Chadah Sikh, of Thanil Kamal, P. S.
Nila, District Jhelum. He is a brother of Amrik Singh of Thanil Kamal,
district Jhelum (A-24). According to his own statement he went to Persia
via Quetta in 1914 and returned after a year. He again left for Persia in
1921 and opened a cloth shop in Sistan. In 1923 he again paid a brief
visit to India and returned to Persia. In 1930 he along with Dr. Nasib
Singh of Hoshiarpur district (N-28), approached the Soviet Consul at
Meshed and requested him to issue passports to enable them to proceed
to Russia, which the latter agreed to do provided they carried out certain
instructions of the Soviet in regard to propaganda work in India. In the
middle of 1930 Gopal Singh went to Herat whence he came over to
Quetta via Chaman. In Quetta he tried to obtain an endorsement on his
passport for Afghanistan, which was refused. He returned to his home in
1931 and plied a lorry in the Jhelum district. He was sent up for trial
under Section 107, C. P. C. He absconded to Kabul and later settled in
Peshawar City where he plied a lorry between Peshawar and Kabul. In
September 1932, he expressed his willingness to work as a C. I. D. agent
in Persia, but his request after a reference to H. B. M's. Consul-General at
Meshed was refused, and his passport No. 16-A of 1924 issued at
Meshed was impounded. His pass to cross the Frontier has also been
cancelled.
