Dharambir Singh, son ofA.F. Soares, Hindu, ofAldana, District Bardez,
Goa, but latterly of Delhi. He came into political arena in 1930, when he
joined the Civil Disobedience movement. Was member of the Working
Committee ofthe Kirti Kisan Party, Delhi. Was sentenced at Delhi to 1
months' simple imprisonment on 23rd September 1930 and served a
portion of his sentence in the Punjab jails, where he came into contact
with Dr. Mui Raj Mehta, a leader of the Hindustan Socialist Republican
Association in the Punjab. In 1931 he reorganised the Nau Jawan Bharat
Sabha, Delhi, with himself as Secretary and one Bhal Singh as President.
Was reported to have been entrusted with two pistols by Mui Raj Mehta,
which he in his turn gave to another terrorist in Delhi, named Harbandu
Samaidar. In 1931 three separate sources showed that Mui Raj Mehta was
trying to reorganise the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association with
the assistance of Dharambir Singh. He left Delhi for Ludhiana on 27th
November 1931, where he was arrested with Chaman Lal Azad and
proceeded against under Section 109 C. P. C. and sentenced to one year's
rigorous imprisonment. He successfully appealed against his sentence and
was released on 10th June 1932. Associated in Delhi with terrorists
including Jatindar Mohan Rakshit, and was extemed. Subsequently he
went to Meerut from where also his association with communists led to
his extemment early in September 1932. Later he came to notice in
Calcutta where he made a statement. In Calcutta he appears to have been
admitted into the Workers' Party. Is believed to be in touch with All-India
Communist organisers and terrorists in Bengal. He is a member of the
Communist Party ofAbdul Halim and took part in agitation in the strikes
of the workers of Tollygunj Rice Mills, and also of the workers of
Matiabruz. Is living with the communist Abdul Halim at 41, Zakariah
Street, Calcutta.
