D-13. Darbara Singh Sodhi, M.A., son of Attar Singh, alias Lachhman Singh,
originally ofNawshera Phadana, P. S. Barki, District Lahore, but literly of
Bedianwala, District Lyallpur. He matriculated in a school in the
Amritsar district and then proceeded to the U. S. A; about 1920 for
further studies and obtained his M. A. degree there. He first came to
notice in 1922 for his interest in the Ghadr Party. In 1923 it was reported
that he had been in correspondence with M. N. Roy, the notorious
communist. He was probably the author of an article entitled "India
whither bound" which appeared in the 'United States of India' of San
Francisco, an organ ofthe Ghadr Party, in its issue of October 1927. He
returned to India from America in September 1929 bringing with him
some communist and other objectionable literature. Early in 1930 he set
up a cafe in Delhi which failed. Thereafter he left for Amritsar where in
partnership with Partap Singh, M.A., of Kairon, district Amritsar (P-16),
a returned emigrant holding advanced views, he started a paper, entitled
’New Era’, on Communist lines with himself as Assistant Editor. Though
the paper started with a decidedly independent tone it could fairly be
described as a Kirti Kisan and Ghadr organ. Darbara Singh is a great
admirer of Lenin.
