Chuhar Singh, alias Charby Singh, son of Bhola Singh, caste Hindu of
Paldi, P. S. Mahilpur, District Hoshiarpur. He went to the U.S.A, in
February 1910. Was originally a supporter of the late Ramchandra of
Peshawar. Was arrested on 7th April 1917 along with other members of
Ramchandra's party, but was subsequently released. In September 1917
he allied himself with Bhagwan Singh’s (of v. Viring, d. Amritsar—
formerly a prominent leader of the Ghadr Party) faction and accompanied
Rattan Singh (R-36) and Santokh Singh of v. Dudher, d. Amritsar (since
dead) on a subscription tour to Biggs. Early in 1918 he attended the
Ghadrites’ trial in San Francisco and visited Bhagwan Singh's Ashram.
During 1919 he was connected with the Yolo Rice Co., in which the
Ghadr Party had invested money. In the absence of Bhagwan Singh and
Santokh Singh in jail he actively helped in keeping alive the interests of
the Ghadr Party and preventing the deportation of the leaders. He was
elected to the Sacramento District Ghadr Committee at a big Ghadr
meeting convened by Santokh Singh at Sacramento early in January 1920.
He sailed from San Francisco for India by the s.s. "Korea Maru" on the
10th August 1921. He seems to have again gone abroad after a short stay
in India. He was reported to be in Kobe, Japan in May 1924 and to be
intending to sail for Mexico. He presumably returned to the U.S.A.
because in 1929 he was a regular quarterly subscriber to the Kirti fund of
the Ghadr Party. In 1930 he was selected to be one of the Treasures of the
Ghadr Party, but otherwise does not appear to be particularly active.
