Chattar Singh, son of Mewa Singh, Ahluwalia, of Village Jethuwal,
Police Station Kathunangal, District Amritsar. After matriculating in
1885 he was employed as a Guard on the North Western Railway and also
did contract work at Delhi. He went to Burma about 1905 and worked
there as a contractor for some time. Later on he became an agent of the
Borneo Company in Siam. He was reported to be a dangerous member of
the Ghadr Party and was present at a meeting held at the Chiengmai
Gurdwara at which an oath was taken to fight against the English. He also
volunteered to conduct the English correspondence of the seditious party.
He was arrested at Chiengmai and deported and arrived in India in April
1916, when he was arrested under the Ingress into India Ordinance. He
was interned in the Campbellpore jail in July 1916 but was released and
restricted to his village in January 1918, the restriction order being
cancelled in September 1918. He secured employment at Lahore in the
press of Sardul Singh Cavessieur, and in 1921 was arrested in connection
with the Lahore Akali Conspiracy Case, but was released. He was again
employed by Sardul Singh, but was soon after sentenced to 6 months'
rigorous imprisonment for publishing a seditious book. After his release
he was appointed Assistant Manager of Baba Budha's Gurdwara at
Ramdas and subsequently transferred to the Khadur Sahib Gurdwara. He
is reported to be an Akali of the worst type but to be quiet at present and
working on his land.
