Chanan Singh

Chanan Singh, son of Chattar Singh, Village Jaisinghwala, Police Station Bagha Purana, District Ferozepore. According to his statement he left India in 1899 or 1900 for Hong Kong and thence proceeded to Manila in 1901. Has all along been in Manila with the exception Qf 2 short visits to India in 1903 and 1911 (or 1912). He was reported to be a very wealthy member of the Ghadr Party in Manila. While the s.s. "Korea" bringing a portion of the Ghadr Party from America was stopping at Manila, Chanan Singh accompanied by Hafiz Abdullah Khoja of village Jagraon, district Ludhiana (hanged in the Second Supplementary Lahore Conspiracy Case), Shanti Lal of Mohalla Qilla, Jullundur City and Hazara Singh visited the ship. They stated that they were regular recipients of the "Ghadr" and were trying to increase the membership of the society at Manila and that they would possibly accompany the "Korea's" passengers to India in the interests of the Ghadr cause. He was mentioned as treasurer in a very mutinous letter which was written from the Yugantar Ashram to Hafiz Abdullah Khoja. About 1917 he was Vice-President of the Indian Revolutionary Society, Manila, whose activities were largely financed by him. He is a money-lender by profession. He has a brother Dharm Singh who returned from Manila in July 1921. At about the same time he set up a saloon with K. Santa Singh. In 1922 he was Vice- President of the Indian Association of Manila, and was suspected to be the ring-leader in an abortive attempt to assassinate His Royal Highness. The Prince of Wales during his visit to Manila in that year, which he, however, flatly denied at an interview with His Britannic Majesty’s Consul at Manila in 1927. In 1926 his name appeared among the list of Indian subscribers to the Desh Bhagat Qaidi Parwar Sahaik Committee (Patriot Prisoners Relief Association). He was granted an Emergency Certificate for a single journey to India in April 1926, but he does not appear to have made the journey and in 1927 was still reported to be in Manila. In July 1927 he is said to have sent a letter to Indar Singh and Kartar Singh asking them to have one Bishan Singh "cleared out of the way" at any cost either by implicating him in a robbery or planting a pistol in his house or bribing the police.
