Budh Singh

Village: Sheron

City: Amritsar

Budh Singh, alias Hazara Singh, alias Hajara Singh, son of Gall Singh, of Sheron, P. S. Tam Tam, District Amritsar. He left his village in 1921 owing to the fear of the suspicion entertained of his having had a share in the loot in Martial Law days. Prior to his departure he was connected with the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee. In 1924 he was in Mexico, and the Pacific Coast Khalsa Diwan applied on his behalf to the Consul-General at San Francisco for his entry into the U. S. A., representing him as a priest-designate of the Sikh Temple in Stockton, California. His passport No. 4430 issued at Lahore on the 1st December 1921, which was submitted for inpsection had obviously been mutilated with a view to deceiving the United States Consular Officials, and consequently the British Consular authorities were averse to recommending his entry into the U. S. A., nor would the U. S. Consular Officials grant him a visa for the purpose. At any rate he seems to have entered the U. S. A., under the false name of Hazara Singh, at some point on the Mexican border subsequent to January 1926. In December 1930 it was reported that he had been'in jail at San Quentin for some years on charges of theft and forgery, and that his release was impending. It was further stated that he had been mixed up with shooting affrays in California. Having in fact, himself committed one or more murders, and that the Ghadr Party were doing their best to secure his release. Was described as a violent and dangerous type of man. He was deported to India on 19th June 1931 by the s.s. "President Mckinley" with transhipment at Hong Kong. He however made good his escape at Shanghai and was reported to be living at the India Youth League’s premises at Chapei. Nothing was heard of him until 3rd October 1931, when he was found to be a passenger on the s.s. "Kwang Tung" bound for Canton from Shanghai. In his possession were discovered certain books and papers of an inflammatory nature and for this offence he was 47 [B-82—86. sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour, on 5th October 1931 with subsequent repatriation. Arrived at Calcutta by the s.s. "Talamba" on 23rd February 1932, and immediately left for his native place under surveillance.
