Bhagwan Singh, Canadian, son of Dewa Singh, Jat, of Dosanjh Kalan, P. S. Phillaur, District Jullundur. Went to America about 1906. Came to notice in 1922 when he was appointed Treasurer of the Canadian American Press Society of Doaba. Was elected Secretary of the Society in 1923. Became a subscriber to the "Desh Sewak" of Jullundur and collected money for the "Pardesi Khalsa" and other Akali newspapers of India. His zeal for the Akali cause caused him to leave Vancouver in 1924 and to become Jathedar of the Canadian Shahidi Jatha of 10 Sikhs which arrived at Amritsar after visiting various places en route. Bhagwan Singh was arrested with Harbakhsh Singh (H-9) under Section 17 (2) of the C.L.A. Act and was sentenced to 2 years R. I. and a fme of Rs. 1,000. In November 1926 he was elected President of the Pardesi Khalsa Diwan, a society of returned emigrants then formed to control the Akali Press and the Desh Bhagat Qaidi Parwar Sahaik Committee (Committee for the relief of the families of political prisoners). In December of that year he became a member of the Desh Bhagat Parwar Sahaik Committee and visited Delhi, Calcutta and Burma with Baba Wasakha Singh of Dedher (W-6), to collect subscriptions for the Committee. Was elected President of the Doaba American Canadian Society in January 1927 and re-elected 39 [B-59—61. in May 1928. Was elected Vice-President of the Reception Committee of the Central Sikh League which held its session at Hoshiarpur on 4th October 1927. Arranged a Sikh Diwan in February 1928 at Dosanjh Kalan in which resolutions condemning the book "Mother India" and urging the boycott of the Simon Commission were passed. In the same year he applied for the renewal of his Canadian passport but his application was rejected. Attended a meeting of the Kirti Party held at Jullundur on 28th April 1928 in which discussion took place on a proposal to buy land in Bikanir and Behawalpur States for the dependents of those who had sacrificed their lives for the country. In 1930 he was President of the Jullundur Akali Dal and in July 1931 was elected a member of the Working Committee of the Provincial Kirti Kisan Party. Was one of the signatories to an Urdu leaflet dealing with the Kirti movement in India which was circulated in California in 1931.
