Bhagat Singh, alias Charanjit Singh, son of Natha Singh, Lambardar,
' Village Tibba, P. S. Sultanpur, Kapurthala State. Was educated at
Randhir College. Went to the U. S. A. in November 1911. A student of
California University. Berkeley, in 1911 and the University of Illinois,
Urbana, from 1913 to 1917. Graduated from the latter University in 1917
in Physics. Was on friendly terms with D. Chenchiah, V P. Aiyar and
other notorious students and revolutionaries and used to write on religious
and educational subjects. Was Secretary of the Hindustan Association
under the name of Charanjit Singh and a prominent subscriber to the
"Ghadr.” Held the alternative posts of priest and Assistant Secretary at the
Stockton Temple. He resigned in 1920. Arrived at his village at the
beginning of December 1921. Stayed with his father for some time and
then went to Nabha State where he worked in a school and in the
Engineering Department. Associates with sadhus and saints and also with
men holding political views. Left service in 1923 and returned to his
village. Became a disciple of Sant Attar Singh of Gurdwara Damdama
Sahib in the Patiala State, and took to preaching. On the death of the
latter, Bhagat Singh worked as a preacher and also acted as Manager of
the Gurdwara. Was in correspondence with Dalip Singh, son of Sundar
Singh, P. O. Box No. 661, Marysville, California, in December, 1929. Is
reported to be living at present in the Bikaner State and to have been the
recipient of Ghadr money from abroad and to have been disbursing large
amounts of it to Akali institutions and Ghadrites. His father owns landed
property.
