Bhagat Singh, alias S. Achal, son of Bhagwan Singh, of Village Shanker,
District Jullundur. He sailed from Bombav for Marseilles in Januarv

1921. Worked in France as a labourer till May 1923 and then went to
Mexico. From Mexico he went to the U. S. A. He was deported from Ei
Paso, Texas, in October 1923 because of his illegal entry. He returned to
the U. S. A. in 1925, under the name of S. Achal having been employed,
it is said, in Shanghai for some time, and then gone to Mexico. He
worked for some years in the Ford Motor Company at Detroit.
Subsequently he went to California where he opened a motor garage in
Marysville. He was reported to be a member of the Ghadr Party. About
the end of 1931, probably at the instigation of the Ghadr Party, he
murdered Babu Lal Menrow, a clerk in the Bombay Punjab Grocery Store
at Marysville, for which crime he was convicted and sentenced to an
indeterminate term of 1 to 10 years. Early in 1932 the Ghadr Party were
reported to be collecting funds for his defence.
