Bhag Singh, B.A., alias Master Bhag Singh, son of Sundar Singh, Jat,
Village Makhsuspur, P. S. Mahilpur, District Hoshiarpur. After passing
the Matriculation Examination from the Nadalon School he joined the
Kapurthala College, which he soon left as a result of the Akali agitation.
He, however, rejoined the Dayal Singh College, Lahore, and after passing
the F. A. examination, joined the Khalsa High School at-Hoshiarpur as a
teacher. He worked for some time as Editor of the 'Desh Sewak',
Jullundur, and about the middle of 1927 was reported to have been
selected by Bhag Singh Canadian (B-47) as one of a deputation of five,
whom the latter intended to send to Rangoon for the ostensible purpose of
collecting funds for the restoration of the Anandpur Gurdwara, but in
reality to be sent to Russia via China for military training there, in
response to the demand of Sikh revolutionaries abroad for more workers.
This scheme, however, does not seem to have materialised, and in
December 1927 he went to California after having managed to obtain a
passport on the false recommendation of a lambardar of his village. He
was reported to have held extreme political views while in India and to
have joined all the political Diwans of the Doaba and delivered speeches
on various occasions. In America he is reported to have been assisting the
Ghadr Party intermittently and latterly has been doing translation work
for them. In the latter half of 1930 his address was P. O. Box 58,
Berkeley, California. He wrote to his friends from this address, especially
to Master Sundar Singh of Lyallpur, extolling the merits of the latter's
paper 'Melu1 and urging young men to go to foreign countries for higher
education. From his correspondence it was evident that he was associated
with Piara Singh of Langeri (P-25) while the latter was in America
(1928-30). He is a close friend of Dalip Singh ofNangal Kalan, District
Hoshiarpur (D-5), ex-President of the Ghadr Party. In 1931 he was
reported to be studying for his Ph. D. at Berkeley, California.
