Bawa Singh

Village: Sakrouli

City: Hoshiarpur

Bawa Singh (or Babu Singh), son of Partap Singh, Village Sakrouli. P. S. Mahilpur, District Hoshiarpur. A cousin of Lachman Singh (L-6), formerly in Vancouver, B. C.; and had three uncles named Amar Singh, Hazara Singh and Bakhshi. Amar Singh died in Canada in 1918; Hazara Singh went to America about 1905 and is still there; Bakhshi was also abroad for about 10 years and is now living in his village with Mst. Bhani, wife of Bawa Singh. Bawa Singh attended the D. A. V. College from 1902-03 and after working in a flour mill is believed to have gone to Cape Town in 1907. In 1912 he entered Canada and after working at the Rosedale Mill, Chilliwack, B.C., went to the U. S. A. in 1914. About 1917 he was reported to be the Secretary of the Stockton Gurdwara. At about the same time he sent a copy of the "Ghadr" from Seattle to one Devi Singh of Bochoi. Hoshiarpur, a second year student of the D. A. V. College, Lahore. In June 1920 he was elected first to the Sacramento local Committee of the Ghadr Party and then to the General Committee. Thenceforward he was a regular visitor to the Ghadr Ashram in San Francisco, until he and Jagat Singh (J-6), were suspected of misappropriating Ghadr Party funds. It was not until some years later that he was taken back into the Party when he once more became active, (about 1928). Towards the middle of 1921 he accompanied Bishan Singh Hindi (B-72) on a tour to collect subscriptions for the Amritsar Massacre Memorial. In 1922 and 1924 he served on the Committee of the Ghadr Party; and about this time is stated to have acted as President of the Party. He was then a regular quarterly subscriber to the Ghadr on behalf of the Kirti fund. In 1929-30 he was growing cotton at Delano, California, but is at present believed to be in the Imperial Valley. (Is not to be confused with one Bawa Singh, believed to be identical with Babu Singh alias Narinjan Singh, son of Ganga Ram, of Village Khera, P. S. Mahilpur, District Hoshiarpur, who was arrested at Union Island by the U.S. Immigration Authorities in 1931 for illegal entry in the U. S. A.).
