Banta Singh, son of Mewa Singh, Jat, of Chabbal, P. S. Tam Tam, District
Amritsar. He was enlisted as a Sowar in the 11th Lancers in 1905 and
was dismissed for insubordination after a year's service. A year later he
went to Shanghai where he was employed as a Constable in the Municipal
Police. He was dismissed from his post in October 1910 for being a
source of quarrels between the Sikhs of Malwa and Majha tracts.
Subsequently he was employed in Shanghai-Nanking Railway, and
became intimate with the late Ganda Singh of Ladhewal Gharai, District
Gujranwala, Kesar Singh of Sangrana, District Ferozepore (an exseditionist)
and Tehl Singh of Padri Kalan, District Amritsar (formerly of
the Ghadr Party) etc. He was alleged to have been mixed up with
Ghadrites in China and was one of those who were sent by Tehl Singh to
Siam on Ghadr mission but he could not proceed on account of his
illness. In February 1916 he went to Nanking and became an intimate
friend of Roda Singh (R-40) who was alleged to have been the chief agent
in abetting the murder of sub-inspector Hamam Singh. In June 1917 he
was arrested of Hankow and sent to Shanghai where he was kept in
confinement for a month or so and subsequently deported to India. On
arrival he was interned and was released and restricted to his village in
January 1919. He was a staunch member of the Ghadr Party and was said
to be dangerous. He owned a jagir of an annual income of Rs. 80 p.m. at
Qila Sadhura, Tahsil Naraingarh, District Ambala. Is living at his village
and holds Akali views. Is a member of the Gurdwara Committee, Ber
Sahib, P. S. Jhabbal. Associates with Surat Singh, Akali and Narain Singh
son of Ishar Singh, residents of Manan.
