Bakhshish Chand

Bakhshish Chand, alias B. C. Dharney Sharma, son of Sondhi Ram, Brahmin, of Jandiala, Dt. Jullundur. He was once convicted and sentenced to 6 months' imprisonment for stealing a parcel from the Railway Booking Office where he was employed as 'a clerk, but was acquitted on appeal. He subsequently went to Canada and was reported by the authorities to be a seditionist. After an absence of two years he returned to India by the s.s. "Arankola" on the 3rd July 1915, accompanied by Narain Singh of his village, also a suspect, and both were arrested on arrival in the Punjab and interned. In March 1916 he was reported to be still dangerous. He returned to Canada in October 1920, under the alias of B. C. Dharney Sharma, and immediately on arrival addressed letters from Chemainus, V. I. (Box 154) to the Hindustan Ghadr, San Francisco, and Young India, New York, congratulating them and stating that the changed conditions in India were due to their efforts. Ghadr newspaper and other Ashram literature were found to be regularly addressed to him on his return from India. In 1922 he was reported to be a close adherent of the Ghadr Party. He returned to his village from Canada about 4 years ago and opened a retail shop. He has since moved to Jullundur City and is reported to be quiet at present. His associates include Chainchai Singh (C-3), Puran Singh of Jandiala and Mansha Singh (M-54).

Description : Age about 35 years; height about 5'-9"; dark complexion; heavy broad physique; flat face; five wound marks on the forehead; brown eyes; two moles on right cheek; can read and write English, Gurmukhi and Hindi. His photograph is on record in. the Punjab C.I.D.
